New Delhi: A new malware threat has emerged in India, targeting Android users, jeopardizing their data security, and conducting unauthorized transactions under the name 'Judy.'

This malicious software, cunningly disguised as a legitimate app, is making its way into devices through deceptive tactics, including fake news articles and social media posts.

Once infiltrated, Judy demonstrates its insidious capabilities by siphoning off users' contact information, browsing history, and sensitive financial data, enabling unauthorized withdrawals from their bank accounts.

Protecting Yourself Against Malware Attacks:

  • Source Credibility: Download apps exclusively from reputable sources like the Google Play Store. Avoid sideloading apps from third-party sources.
  • Permission Scrutiny: Exercise caution when granting permissions to apps during installation. Be discerning and consider whether the requested permissions align with the app's purpose.
  • Regular Updates: Keep your apps and operating system up to date. Developers frequently release updates that address security vulnerabilities.
  • Security Software: Employ a trustworthy security app to scan your device regularly for malware and other threats. These apps can provide real-time protection.

Swift Response to Infection: If you suspect your device has been compromised, act promptly:

Run a malware scan using a security app. Consider a factory reset, but be cautious as this will erase all data on your device. Contact your phone carrier for professional assistance. Report the incident to your bank to mitigate financial risks.

Reporting a Malware Attack:

In the event of a malware attack, promptly report the incident to the appropriate authorities, such as the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), a government agency dedicated to addressing cybersecurity incidents.

You can report malware attacks to CERT-In through their website or by calling their helpline.
