The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati, managed by the Adani Group, is set to open its new terminal by April 2025. This comes after a senior official announced a delay from the initial target of December 2024 due to design changes aimed at improving capacity and services.

Chief Airport Officer (CAO) Utpal Baruah explained that the four-month delay was necessary to incorporate additional facilities into the terminal’s design. "We made some changes to the original design to ensure the new terminal meets higher standards of service and capacity," he said.

The airport's management was leased to Adani Enterprises for a 50-year period, following approval from the Union Cabinet in August 2020. The Gujarat-based company took over operations from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) in October 2021.

The new terminal is expected to significantly enhance the airport’s ability to handle more passengers and provide better services, marking a major upgrade for the region's main aviation hub.

Major Investment in Infrastructure to Enhance Capacity and Connectivity

#Current Affairs #Guwahati airport: IndiaThe new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati will have a capacity to handle 13.1 million passengers per annum (mppa), significantly up from the current 3.4 mppa, according to a senior official.

Chief Airport Officer (CAO) Utpal Baruah stated, "More than Rs 2,000 crore is being invested in the entire facility. Of this, around Rs 1,600 crore is dedicated to the terminal building, with the remaining funds allocated for constructing a new taxiway and expanding the runway."

The completion of the parallel taxiway will enhance the runway's capacity, increasing air traffic movements from the current 18 to 34. This upgrade is a crucial part of the airport’s expansion plans.

The Adani Group has set four key visions for the airport. The first priority is to establish connections with all 16 airports in the Northeast, as well as major cities across India. This initiative aims to significantly improve regional connectivity and boost economic growth in the area.

The enhanced infrastructure and expanded capacity will transform LGBI Airport into a major aviation hub, accommodating the increasing passenger traffic and supporting the growing demand for air travel in the region.
