MEXICO CITY: A new United State-bound caravan with as many as 500 migrants from Central and South American countries has set off from Mexico's southernmost state of Chiapas, local media reported. 500 migrants from Central and South American nations have embarked on a fresh caravan headed toward the United States, it  said.

The caravan left on Monday from Miguel Hidalgo Central Park in the border city of Tapachula, Guatemala, where many migrants had been stuck for days while they awaited the processing of the permits required to legally cross Mexico toward its northern border with the US.  According to local media, the caravan passed past an immigration checkpoint around 6 kilometres north of Tapachula without any issues or conflicts with immigration officials.

The migrants aim to receive travel permits more swiftly in San Pedro Tapanatepec, in southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, than in Tapachula, therefore they will trek around 300 km over the following few days. 

According to local media accounts, several migrant caravans left Tapachula in recent months and throughout 2021, albeit the majority were dispersed by Mexican authorities.

In contrast to Chiapas, where immigrants pour nonstop, primarily from Central and South America, some migrants have taken employment possibilities in places with lesser immigration flows.

More than 10,000 migrants travelled in the largest caravan this year, which left Tapachula on June 6. Five days later, an accord with immigration authorities led to the caravan's dissolution.
