New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday detained a Bengaluru-based NHAI official, and four others of a private company in a Rs 20 lakh bribery case.

A case against the NHAI official and two contractors was filed earlier this month, according to CBI officials. Raids on the accused's homes were carried out thereafter, notably in Delhi, Bengaluru, Kochi, Gurugram, and Bhopal.

Akil Ahmad, Regional Officer of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Bengaluru, and Dilip Buildcon Ltd's Executive Director Devendra Jain, General Manager Retnakaran Sajilal, official Sunil Kumar Verma, and Anuj Gupta were named as the defendants. The agency "will seek prison custody to expose the bigger conspiracy," the person said, adding that all those arrested will be brought before a competent court.

"We have a lot of evidence to recover. The accused will also face off against one another” the official said.  Ahmad allegedly demanded a 'illegal payoff' from the private company's General Manager in order to clear the project under the Benguluru-Chennai Expressway Package 1 and 2 in Karnataka. The CBI received a tip and set up a trap to catch all of the defendants red-handed.
