New Delhi: National Highways Authority of India i.e. NHAI is exploring new options to raise additional funds for new projects. His move to award toll contracts for road projects prepared through the ToT scheme has proved inadequate. Therefore, now it will also raise money by leasing the land along the highways. This proposal has recently been approved by the NHAI Board. NHAI will raise funds by leasing the land on the side of its highway projects to private companies. The need has been felt due to the increased cost of land acquisition in new road projects.

The land along the highway near the metros and cities has been found more suitable for this scheme. They have been named as Highway Influence Zone. NHAI estimates that 500-500 meters of plots on both sides of these highways can be taken on lease. According to officials, efforts are being made to take the respective state governments into confidence to implement this scheme this year.
