Chennai: On Saturday, officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids at several locations in Royapettah, Tamil Nadu, as part of an ongoing probe into the banned terrorist organization Hizb-ut-Tahrir. The operation focused on properties linked to Hameed Hussain, who is accused of organizing secret meetings aimed at promoting an Islamic State ideology.
The NIA has taken over the investigation from the Central Crime Branch (CCB), which had previously been examining Hameed Hussain, the Chief Coordinator of Hizb-ut-Tahrir. Hussain is accused of holding clandestine meetings with the intent to establish an Islamic State. An FIR was filed under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. In May, the CCB arrested Hameed Hussain along with his father Ahmed Mansoor, Abdul Rahman, Mohammed Mauris, Ahmed Al Umari, and Khader Nawaz Sheriff.
During Saturday's raids, NIA officials targeted multiple sites in Royapettah, including a hall reportedly used by Hameed Hussain for the secret meetings. Sources indicate that the six individuals involved used social media to propagate Islamic Caliphate ideology. The CCB had previously found that Hussain conducted these meetings in locked rooms and through video conferencing.
The NIA also raided the Modern Essential Education Trust, managed by Hameed Hussain, to gather additional evidence. The trust’s meeting hall is believed to have been exclusively used for these activities.
The investigation is ongoing, and further developments are expected.
