There will be many actresses who played Maa in Hindi films, but the way Nirupa Roy lived mother's character was not only unparalleled but she also took mother's character to great heights with her performance. Today i.e. 4th January is Nirupa Roy's birthday. Nirupa Roy was born in a middle-class Gujarati family. Nirupa's father worked in the railways. Nirupa has completed her education till class IV. She was then married to Kamal Roy, an employee of the rationing department. Nirupa came to Mumbai after marriage.

At that time director, BM Vyas was looking for a new face for his film. Nirupa's husband was also very fond of appearing in films, he also wanted to become a hero. BM Vyas had also given an ad in the paper for his film, seeing that Kamal went to meet Vyas with his wife, but Vyas refused him, saying that he is not fit to be a hero. Vyas also said that if he wants, he can keep his wife here for the heroine. Nirupa said yes to working for the film 'Ranakdevi' at Rs 150 a month.

Nirupa Roy gave new dimensions to Maa's character. She was also awarded the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting actress thrice for her outstanding performance. Her original name was Kokila Ben. Although she started her film career with the Gujarati film Ganasundari released in 1946, she never looked back when she stepped into Hindi films. Her first Hindi film was Hamari Manzil released in 1949. Nirupa Roy also worked in a producer director's film Ranakdevi like BM Vyas at Rs 150 per month, though she was later dropped from the film. Nirupa Roy got all the work she got as a role as Aan, but she accepted it as a challenge and that led to her success.

She has worked in films like Do Bigha Zameen, Munim Ji, Chhaya, Deewar, Khoon Paseena, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Amar Akbar Anthony, Suhag, Inquilaab, 'Giraftaar', 'Mard' and 'Ganga-Jamuna-Saraswati.' Nirupa Roy was last seen in the film 'Lal Badshah' as Amitabh Bachchan's mother. Nirupa Roy passed away on October 13, 2004.
