NEW DELHI: Law Secretary Niten Chandra, a 1990-batch Odisha cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, has been entrusted with the crucial responsibility of heading the Central Agency Section within the Department of Legal Affairs. This designation will be effective until his tenure in the department or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.

The decision to appoint Niten Chandra as the in-charge of the Central Agency Section was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This move came after the Department of Legal Affairs proposal received the necessary endorsement, citing an order issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions Department of Personnel and Training.

Niten Chandra's journey within the legal domain has been commendable. Having served as the Secretary in the Department of Legal Affairs under the Ministry of Law and Justice since May of the previous year, he has showcased exceptional dedication to his role. In 2020, he was appointed as the Additional Secretary of the Central Agency Section in the Department of Legal Affairs. Prior to that, he had held the position of Secretary in the Central Information Commission (CIC).

"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Department of Legal Affairs to designate Shri Niten Chandra, IAS (OR:1990), Law Secretary as Incharge, Central Agency Section till his tenure in the Department or until further orders, whichever is earlier," stated the official order.

Beyond his responsibilities within the legal framework, Niten Chandra also serves as a Member-ex official of the India International Arbitration Centre. His active involvement spearheaded the government's initiative to revitalize the Alternate Dispute Resolution space in India, leading to the establishment of the India International Arbitration Centre through the amendment of the NDIAC Act 2019.

A fervent advocate of legal reform, Niten Chandra firmly believes in the importance of simplifying legal procedures, expediting the dispensation of justice, and resolving disputes to ensure comprehensive development for the nation. His commitment to this cause has been unwavering, making him an invaluable asset to the Department of Legal Affairs.
