New Delhi: It has been more than 40 days for the farmers to protest on the borders of Delhi against the new agricultural laws brought by the Central Government. However, there is no agreement between the farmers and the government so far. Meanwhile, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has told the main problem in an interview about excess food grains and minimum support price (MSP) over market price.
Asking the interview, Gadkari said why is it that the price of sugar in the global market is Rs 22 per kg, but we are paying Rs 34 per kg for sugarcane? Our MSP exceeds international prices and market prices and that is the problem. He further said that the root cause of the problem is more food grains than required and more MSP than market value.
He told that at one time we had a scarcity of food grains in the country. After the Green Revolution, we now have rice in the surplus. Before 2020 production, there were about 280 lakh tonnes of rice in our warehouses. We can give rice to the whole world. In the case of corn, the MSP is Rs 1,700, while the market price is around Rs 1,100. Last year, we exported 6 million tonnes of sugar, on which a subsidy of Rs 600 crore.
