SEOUL: According to satellite imagery, North Korea looks to be continuing activities at its major Yongbyon nuclear facility, with signs of certain facilities even being expanded, according to a North Korean information provider.
According to reports, the evaluation comes amid concerns that the stubborn and unpredictable regime may conduct another nuclear test in the near future.
According to a recent posting on 38 North's website, commercial satellite photographs taken from April 27 to May 14 of the site, north of Pyongyang, show continued operations at its 5 MWe reactor as well as expansion initiatives, such as the construction of structures around the experimental light water reactor.
"Taken together, these activities point to a longer-term investment in the country's nuclear weapons development," it said.
Since late April, 38 North has noticed more traffic than typical around the 5 MWe reactor and a nearby spent fuel storage building, including many transport trucks and as many as three tractor trailers. There has been no new activity at the experimental light water reactor, which has yet to begin operations, but the development of structures nearby looks to be continuing, the report added.
