Seoul: According to a media report quoting South Korea's military, North Korea fired an unidentified projectile, which seemed to be a ballistic missile, towards the East Sea on Saturday.

Pyongyang's ninth missile launch this year comes just four days before South Korea's presidential election on March 9, the report read. In its report, the Yonap news quoted South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) as saying, "Currently, our military is tracking and monitoring (North Korean) movements regarding the likelihood of an additional launch and maintaining a ready posture." The launch comes only one week after North Korea successfully tested a ballistic missile it said was a "reconnaissance satellite" development test.

According to the media outlet, North Korea has conducted nine missile tests since the beginning of this year, raising concerns that it will continue to engage in provocative behaviour after making a veiled threat in January to end its self-imposed moratorium on nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests since late 2017.

Meanwhile, the Japanese government has expressed its displeasure with North Korea's missile launch, according to Sputnik, citing Japan's Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi.
