It’s Uttam Kumar’s death anniversary on July 24. And it has been a tradition of sorts for people to gather at his residence to pay homage to the Mahanayak. But since last year, his family members have discontinued the tradition. Gourab Chatterjee, Uttam Kumar’s grandson had told us last year, “Usually, on Dadu’s death anniversary, we keep one of our rooms open for his fans to drop by. But this year, we have decided to not do so keeping the pandemic in mind. Though we understand their sentiments, maintaining social distance is of prime importance now. We have planned to make it a very close and private affair.”
This year too they won’t be allowing anyone for the same reason. “From July 1, people have started asking whether they can visit our house on July 24 but we couldn’t help but ask them not to come. We had to take this decision as avoiding crowds is equally prime importance now as the virus is still there. This year too we’ll spend Dadu’s death anniversary in a private way,” said Gourab.
