Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Health Minister Veena George has reassured the public that there is no need to panic following reports of a large-scale outbreak of viral fever and respiratory infections in China. Speaking on Saturday, Ms. George emphasized that the state government is closely monitoring the situation and remains vigilant.
In a Facebook post, the minister stated that no evidence has emerged so far of any virus in China with the potential to become a pandemic or spread rapidly to other regions. "We are monitoring developments in China. If an outbreak is identified that could spread globally, we are equipped to respond quickly and prevent its spread," she said.
The minister also urged extra caution, especially among vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, children, and the elderly. She recommended wearing masks as a precautionary measure. Additionally, she pointed out the importance of vigilance given Kerala’s large expatriate population, including frequent travelers to and from China.
National Monitoring Efforts
Meanwhile, the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed that it is closely tracking respiratory and seasonal influenza cases across India. The agency is collaborating with international health organizations to stay updated on the reported outbreak of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China.
A senior NCDC official stated, "We will continue to monitor the situation and validate information as developments unfold."

Director General of Health Services (DGHS), Dr. Atul Goel, explained that the Human Metapneumovirus is a respiratory virus similar to those causing the common cold. While it can lead to flu-like symptoms, particularly in young children and the elderly, it is not considered a major public health threat at this time. As authorities remain alert and proactive, the public is encouraged to stay informed and follow recommended safety measures to minimize risks.
China Addresses Concerns Over Reported Flu Outbreaks, Assures Safety for Travelers
On Friday, China dismissed concerns about a widespread flu outbreak overwhelming hospitals, clarifying that the current wave of respiratory illnesses during the winter season is less severe than in the previous year. The statement came amidst media reports suggesting that hospitals across the country were facing significant pressure due to an influx of patients presenting flu-like symptoms.
In an official statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry reassured the global community that the situation is under control. Authorities emphasized that China's healthcare system is equipped to handle seasonal diseases effectively and noted that public health measures are actively in place to curb the spread of winter illnesses. The ministry also affirmed that China remains a safe destination for international travelers. “It is safe for foreigners to travel to China,” a spokesperson stated, seeking to allay fears and reinforce confidence in the country's preparedness to manage seasonal health challenges.
