Thiruvananthapuram: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday recommended a fisherman of Kerala or Nobel Peace Prize 2019.  Thiruvananthapuram MP wrote a letter to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee recommending that the fishermen of Kerala this year’s award in recognition of their “selfless, lifesaving service” during the disastrous floods that had struck the state last year.

Tharoor wrote the letter to the committee on Wednesday, nominating the Kerala fishermen for the prestigious.  He was addressed to Berit Reiss-Anderson, chairwoman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. He wrote, “I would like to nominate the fishermen of Kerala for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. They represent an outstanding and wholly deserving candidacy, one that would be a worthy addition to the champions of humanity that the award has recognised over the years.”  He further added, “It was during the height of this tragedy that fishermen groups of Kerala, at great risk to their lives and potential damage to the boats that are the source of their livelihood, jumped into the fray to save their fellow citizens.”

Last year Kerala faced one of the worst deluge in a century, thousands of fishermen participated in the rescue operations and played a crucial role in saving 65,000 marooned civilians.
