Since morning, there were discussions regarding the Nobel Peace Prize as many nominees were acclaimed to receive it. The World Food Program, a United Nations agency, was granted the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for its attempts to resist hunger globally, the Nobel committee declared in its statement. The organization was recognized for its work during a coronavirus pandemic that has “contributed to a strong upsurge in the number of victims of hunger in the world,” the committee stated in a statement.

Discussions get high over Nobel Peace Prize

With this year’s Nobel Peace Prize conferred to the WFP, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes to turn the eyes of the world towards the millions of people who suffer from or face the threat of hunger. Talk about nominations, there were 318 candidates -- 211 individuals and 107 organizations -- for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize, which is the fourth largest number in the history of the prize.

The decision came out on Friday in Oslo by Berit Reiss-Andersen, the chair of the Nobel Committee. In 2019, the WFP, which is the world’s leading humanitarian organization combating hunger, provided aid to close to 100 million people across 88 countries who suffered from acute food insecurity and hunger. The WFP is the UN’s main instrument working to destroy hunger, one of the global body’s Sustainable Development Goals, adopted in 2015.
