NEW DELHI: In a significant development, Nokia and Apple have recently inked a long-term patent license agreement, replacing the existing license set to expire by the end of 2023.

The history of legal disputes between Apple and Nokia dates back to 2009 when Apple accused Nokia of iPhone imitation, while Nokia counter-sued Apple for copyright infringements. Fortunately, they reached a settlement in 2011. However, tensions flared up again in 2016, resulting in lawsuits before eventually resolving the matter in 2017 when Apple agreed to pay a substantial sum of $2 billion to Nokia.

Under this new license pact, Nokia's groundbreaking innovations in 5G and various other technologies will be encompassed. Apple commits to making multi-year payments to Nokia.

"We are delighted to have reached a long-term patent license agreement with Apple through mutual understanding. This agreement underscores the exceptional value of Nokia's patent portfolio, which is a testament to our extensive investments in research and development as well as our contributions to cellular standards and other technological advancements," expressed Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies.

Nokia has solidified its position in the industry with an unparalleled patent portfolio backed by over 140 billion euros of R&D investments since 2000. This portfolio comprises approximately 20,000 patent families, including more than 5,500 patent families that are deemed vital to 5G technology.

In exchange for the right to license its inventions on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms, Nokia actively contributes to open standards.

During the 2016 lawsuit, Nokia accused Apple of infringing on numerous patents it owned, including those held by Nokia subsidiaries.

Ever since the resolution of their previous patent dispute, Apple and Nokia have maintained a licensing agreement since 2011, ensuring the use of each other's patents.
