Nokia is set to significantly boost its research and development capabilities in India by establishing its largest global R&D center for fixed networks in Chennai. This ambitious project involves an investment of approximately Rs 450 crore and aims to advance innovation in various technologies, including 10G to 100 GPON, Fixed Wireless Access, Wi-Fi, and access networks.

The new R&D facility will be Nokia’s largest globally for its fixed networks division, reinforcing the company’s dedication to advancing technology. This expansion underscores Nokia’s commitment to developing cutting-edge solutions that bridge the digital divide and connect underserved regions.

Nokia's investment reflects a strategic move to enhance its R&D footprint in India and contribute to the growth of advanced networking technologies. The Chennai center will play a crucial role in driving technological progress and innovation in the fixed wireless sector, reinforcing Nokia's position as a leader in global telecommunications development.

Nokia's factory in Sriperumbudur is among its largest worldwide, focusing on the production of telecom equipment. In India, Nokia operates two other R&D centers located in Bengaluru and Chennai.

According to Raaja, Tamil Nadu has emerged as a leading global hub for R&D and technology services. "Nokia has been a long-time collaborator in Tamil Nadu’s technological advancement. We are proud that the largest fixed network lab within Nokia, and likely globally, will be established in Chennai," he said.

Tamil Nadu has strengthened its position as a key player in telecom R&D with recent investments. Last October, Ericsson set up a 6G research team in Chennai, and just last week, IIT-Madras Research Park launched a center of excellence for 6G Quantum Communications. Additionally, IIT Madras' Pravartak Technologies operates a ComNet lab for testing 5G networks.

Nokia's latest expansion marks a return to its previous prominence in Tamil Nadu. The company was a significant contributor to the state's electronics manufacturing sector in 2014, employing over 50,000 people at its Sriperumbudur SEZ and producing Nokia mobile phones for global markets. However, Nokia had to close this plant in 2014 due to a ₹21,000-crore tax dispute with the Income-Tax Department.
