The Supreme Court of India has summoned the reply by issuing a notice to the Central Government on the petition of the Jharkhand Government challenging the auction of coal mines. The Center has decided to auction 41 coal mines, 9 of them are in Jharkhand.

Last month, PM Narendra Modi started the process of virtual auction of 41 coal blocks, on which Hemant Soren Government of Jharkhand requested a ban. The Jharkhand Government believes that due to the global epidemic, the auction of these mines will not get a fair price, besides the commercial mining of coal mines has affected the lives of tribals.

The Supreme Court ordered the Center to respond to the petition filed by the Jharkhand government. In this, the Center has challenged the decision of auctioning 9 coal blocks in the state for commercial purposes. The state government said that due to the decision of the auction of the Center, it is likely to affect them adversely. This petition has been presented by the lawyer of the state government by advocate Tapesh Kumar Singh. The petition calls for the abolition of the Minerals Laws (Amendment) Act of 14 May 2020 and furthermore the auction process is not legally valid.
