National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has fixed the retail prices of nearly 75 medicines including diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.

NPPA has fixed the prices of medications under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order 2013 based on the decision taken in the 109th meeting of the Authority held on 21 February.

The price of one tablet of Dapagliflozin Sitagliptin and Metformin Hydrochloride (Extended-Release Tablet) has been set at Rs.27.75 according to the NPPA's announcement.

Similarly, the drug regulatory board has also decreased prices of blood pressure drugs such as telmisartan (used to treat high blood pressure, heart failure, and diabetic kidney disease) and bisoprolol fumarate (used for heart disease) (used for heart disease). The cost of one tablet has been decreased to Rs10.92.

The NPPA has also altered the ceiling prices for 80 medications that have been notified (NLEM 2022), including those used to treat neutropenia and epilepsy.

Moreover, the NPPA has lowered the cost of Sodium Valproate (20mg). One tablet is available for a set price of Rs. 3.20. In addition, the cost of one vial of Filgrastim injection (at a fixed price of Rs.1,034.51) has been established. In addition, the cost of the steroid Hydrocortisone has increased to  Rs.13.28 per pill.

The NPPA has the authority to set/revise pricing for bulk medications and formulations under control and to enforce drug costs and accessibility in the nation. In order to maintain low drug prices, it also keeps an eye on their costs. The Medicines (Prices Regulation) Order's provisions are carried out and upheld by the regulator. It is also charged with collecting money from customers who have been overcharged for regulated pharmaceuticals by producers.
