Almost 20% of the population suffers from chronic pain.  A little under 20% of people experience chronic pain. In addition to the negative medical and physical impacts, it can also have significant negative implications on lifestyle, career, and mental health.

According to a recent Edith Cowan University (ECU) study, the main risk to the mental health of persons with chronic pain is not necessarily how strong their pain is, but rather how much it interferes with their daily lives.

More than 300 persons with persistent pain unrelated to cancer were interviewed by ECU researchers Tara Swindells and Professor Joanne Dickson. Participants provided information regarding their mental health, their "pain severity," and the degree to which their pain interfered with important activities and ordinary daily pursuits.

According to Professor Dickson's research, persons who experience pain may not be physically or psychologically able to engage in activities that advance their own goals, which can have serious consequences for their mental health.
The good news is that this research revealed that personal goal flexibility, or the capacity to adapt and adjust to life's difficulties and obstacles, can provide a protective buffer in maintaining and promoting mental health in how we strive to maintain or achieve the things that matter to us, she said.

The effect on mental health: According to Ms. Swindells, contrary to expectations, the study found that for patients with chronic pain, "pain interference" was rated as being more problematic than "pain intensity." These findings "indicate that pain interference with daily life, rather than pain intensity, may have a more detrimental effect on mental wellness," she said.

"Based on our results, people may apparently find ways to maintain their mental health even when experiencing severe pain, provided that it does not negatively impact crucial facets of their everyday lives" the research showed.
