Social media platforms allow individuals to connect and communicate with others, regardless of their geographical location, and it has entirely changed how we interact with people.

We discussed social media in conversation with Ishanki, a Delhi-based Fashion & Lifestyle Creator. She said social media provides many benefits, including increased connectivity, access to information, and starting an ultra-modern business, collaborations & social engagement. While creators create content, engagement is significant if they want to have a loyal and engaged community.

But with every positive side comes a negative one; with every action, there is a reaction. And similarly, on social media, very often, with every supporter comes a person who would disagree with your content. We need to understand that behind that hostile reaction online, a person might be going through some of their life issues and hence post the despicable comment.

We further asked her how she deals with such comments, to which she said - You need to identify haters and constructive critics. And you have to keep your mind open at that moment to differentiate if a comment is coming from a follower who has been following you for a long time. Then, there would be an opportunity to learn and educate yourself. Generally, these people won’t be harsh to you, but a comment coming from a place of negativity is simply trying to get a reaction from you or upset you. In that case, I try not to interact with them or delete the comment.

And I learned this the hard way because one of my Chhath Puja Vlog 2021 gazed into many eyes, and with that, there were so many opinions and hate comments, I tried and explained many of them, but they always had something more hateful to reply. So my lesson from this episode was that it is not worth my time, energy, and mental peace to interact with “trolls” who usually don’t even follow me.

She even added that social media platforms like Instagram bring so many safety and mental health features that you can filter specific words, phrases, and emojis in your comments. Next time someone tries to post anything like that, they’ll not be able to because of the filters applied.

Or you can even restrict a person who usually spreads hate; this feature hides their comments and messages from you while still allowing them to view your posts. It is similar to blocking them but in a polite way.

Lastly, we asked if she had any advice on how to deal with hate comments for someone who is just starting, to which she said - You’re letting people enter your personal space because it is open and public for everyone, but that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to protect yourself because your mental health is above everything. Pick your path wisely.
