New Delhi: India is scheduled to hold a meeting with eight countries in Delhi today on the situation in Afghanistan. The national security advisor (NSA) level meeting will be attended by top security officials from Russia, Iran and five Central Asian countries. China and Pakistan were also called to the meeting. But Pak had already refused to come. On the other hand, China said on Tuesday, "We could not attend the meeting due to some issues related to the time of the programme. However, we have already given our reply to India.''
The Taliban, a terror group, came to power in Afghanistan in August. The meeting will then discuss issues such as the threat of terrorism, regional security concerns and growing drug trafficking in neighbouring countries. Officials in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, who arrived on Tuesday, said India's role on the Afghanistan issue is important. Top security officials from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan will participate in the brainstorming chaired by NSA Ajit Doval.
The high-level discussions will review the security situation in the region in the aftermath of the recent developments in Afghanistan. Measures to address relevant security challenges will be considered.
