Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), formerly known as Bombay Municipal Corporation is the civic body of Mumbai. National Sports Club of India (NSCI) has been allowed to restart its activities as it will continue to be a COVID Care centre till the end of the year. Previously, the entire area of NSCI has been taken as a COVID-19 center. A part of Worli’s National Sports Club of India was given back to NSCI management while retaining the dome and few rooms for treating COVID-19 patients and accommodate doctors.
NSCI was the first jumbo corona treatment center of the city. The usage of cargo containers as ICUs was first innovated here. In spite of the coronavirus battle, the club is taking its form back indicating the slow return to normalcy of the city. Recently, a photographer of a renowned news magazine has captured few pics of a club member playing Tennis. Still, the club management told it will take some time for more sporting arenas to be opened. An official of NSCI said, “Cyclone Nisrag caused a lot of damage. All that will have to be taken care of and new safety protocols for members will have to be put in place”.Though there were controversies between the municipality and the club regarding the payment of the former for the facilities, the club cooperated well with the municipality for COVID-19 treatment.
However, with the increase in cases, the club feels that dome will be used by the BMC at least throughout the year. Proper measures have been taken to separate the COVID-19 test and treatment centers with the club activity area. NSCI was the model for all jumbo centers and is the centre for COVID-19 innovations and a testing ground for contactless testing and the use of AI. To be noted, not even a single staff member of the centre has shown positive yet. NSCI member said that the restaurants and banquet halls will be reopened soon. As of now, only outdoor sports are allowed, the tennis court has been opened. Once the government approves of indoor games, badminton court and all other indoor courts will be opened.
