TEHRAN: The Vienna nuclear discussions could enter a new stage if Iran's economic interests are protected and its red lines respected in the potential US response to its standpoint on the EU's proposal, Iranian Foreign Minister has said in a statement.

According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry's website on Thursday, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the comments during a phone conversation with his Omani colleague Sayyid Badr Hamad al-Busaidi in which they addressed bilateral, regional, and global issues.

Iran will determine whether its interests are protected and red lines are adhered to after obtaining the US answer to the views Iran previously expressed to the European Union over a potential nuclear accord, Amir-Abdollahian added.

However, "we cannot speak of establishing a good and lasting agreement unless an agreement is achieved on everything," he said. Iran has the goodwill and seriousness to come to a "good and lasting" accord.

Meanwhile, the Omani Foreign Minister reportedly expressed optimism that a satisfactory result would be achieved in the Vienna talks through all sides' cooperation.

The EU's proposed deal was the subject of a letter response from Iran on Monday, underlining that the nuclear agreement will be reached provided the US answer demonstrates realism and flexibility.

After a five-month break, the latest round of nuclear negotiations took place in the Austrian capital of Vienna in early August. The "final wording" of the draught decision to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement was presented by the EU on August 8.

In exchange for the lifting of sanctions, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear programme when it signed the nuclear agreement with world powers in July 2015. However, former US President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the pact and reinstituted unilateral sanctions against Tehran, which caused the latter to renege on some of its pact obligations.

Beginning in April 2021 in Vienna, negotiations to resurrect the 2015 nuclear agreement were put on hold in March 2022 due to political tensions between Tehran and Washington.
