New Delhi: Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde has sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice (CJI) of the country on Monday. President Ramnath Kovind administered him the oath. PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah were also present during the swearing-in ceremony. Justice played an important role in many historical decisions.

He has also been involved in the decision to clear the way for the construction of Ram temple at the disputed site of Ayodhya recently. 63-year-old Justice Bobde replaces current Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi. Judge Bobde was also included in the five-judge bench that ruled the controversy over the Ayodhya Ram Janmabhoomi dispute since 1950. In August 2017, a nine-judge bench, led by the then CJI JS Khehar, unanimously ruled that the right to privacy to be a constitutionally protected fundamental right in India.

This bench also included Justice Bobde. Justice Bobde will hold the post of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for 17 months and will retire on 23 April 2021. Justice Bobde comes from a family of lawyers from Maharashtra and his father Arvind Srinivas Bobde was also a noted lawyer.
