Cambodia: Following a two-year pause brought on by Covid-19 crisis, King Norodom Sihamoni of Cambodia planted tree saplings on Saturday in the northwest of the nation to commemorate Arbor Day, or "tree planting day."

Senior government officials, members of both houses of Parliament, foreign ambassadors, key stakeholders, and thousands of locals and students also attended the ceremony. Sihamoni remarked during a ceremony that woods are excellent natural resources for the survival of people and animals, and that forestry is a sustainable investment in nature that benefits all life on the globe.

He also said that planting trees can be done at pagodas, public spaces, tourism hotspots, and on sites next to village routes, national roads, and canals.

"We should pay attention to exploring new ideas, including the marriage couples plantation of trees at the wedding garden/ forest garden set up  by the municipal or provincial government or forestry administrations for all towns, districts, communes and villages," he said.

In the meantime, Sihamoni urged the populace of Cambodia to assist in halting illegal logging, clearing and burning of forests for land, poaching and snaring of wild animals, and wildfires in order to safeguard forests and wildlife for current and future generations of children.

A forest restoration site in Banan district of Battambang province received 13,940 tree seedlings, according to the minister of agriculture, forestry, and fisheries who present at the occasion. In the 1970s, there were 73% of Cambodia's landmass covered in forests, but overlogging has caused that number to drop.
