Every year on October 27, India marks Infantry Day to honor the dedication and sacrifices of the Indian Army's largest fighting force - the infantry. This solemn occasion allows the nation to pay its respects to the valiant soldiers who laid down their lives in the defense of their country.

The significance of Infantry Day lies in the historic events of October 27, 1947, when the Indian Army's first troops landed at the Srinagar airport. This deployment played a pivotal role in compelling invading forces, supported by Pakistan, to retreat, securing the integrity of the nation.

The historical backdrop of this day traces back to October 26, 1947, when Maharaja Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir signed the instrument of accession, officially uniting the princely state with the Indian Union. Subsequently, a battalion of the Sikh Regiment arrived at the Srinagar airbase to counter the tribal invaders, who had received backing from Pakistan.

However, even before the first battalion could reach the battlefield, regular Pakistani soldiers, allegedly masquerading as volunteers from the tribal areas of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), had already infiltrated Jammu and Kashmir. Their mission was to forcefully seize the state and incorporate it into Pakistan. Following initial resistance from the Jammu and Kashmir state forces, Indian troops were called into action on October 27 after the Maharaja had signed the instrument of accession.

The first Indian battalion, under the command of Lt Col Dewan Ranjit Rai, swiftly secured the Srinagar airfield and proceeded to Baramulla in an attempt to halt the invaders' progress. Lt Col Dewan Ranjit Rai valiantly delayed the advance of the infiltrators toward Srinagar but tragically lost his life near Baramulla in the line of duty.

Infantry Day serves as a poignant reminder of the indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment of the Indian Army's infantry, whose sacrifices on this day in 1947 ensured the safeguarding of the nation's territorial integrity. On this day, India comes together to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, upholding the highest traditions of valor and honor.
