In Odisha's Balasore district, a middle-aged married woman was allegedly raped repeatedly by a 'tantrik' for 79 days in front of her two-and-a-half-year-old son, police said on Saturday. The woman and her child were rescued from a locked room by police on Friday, but the accused managed to flee and a manhunt has been launched to nab him.
The survivor said in her police report that her husband and in-laws forced her to stay with the tantrik in order to resolve a marital feud between the woman and her in-laws.
The woman, who married in 2017, claimed her in-laws subjected her to physical and mental abuse for dowry.
The tantrik had promised the family that if the woman stayed with her for a few months, he would fix the conflict. When she refused, her mother-in-law apparently sedated her, and she subsequently awoke in the tantrik's room, where she also found her son.
For 79 days, the tantrik raped the mother in front of her son in the same room. The accused provided the women and child with food. She found the tantrik's phone in the room on April 28 and used it to call her parents and tell them about her ordeal. They then informed the authorities.
However, by the time the cops arrived, the tantrik had managed to flee. The accused is facing charges under many provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 376 (rape).
