Odisha Declares Two-Day Holiday for Rath Yatra After 53 Years

In a major decision, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced a two-day holiday for the upcoming Rath Yatra on July 7 and 8, marking the first time in 53 years that such a holiday has been declared.

During a high-level review meeting, Chief Minister Majhi emphasized the cultural and spiritual importance of the Rath Yatra, noting that this year’s festival holds special significance as it coincides with the tenure of the new BJP government. He instructed officials to ensure that the event is conducted smoothly, reflecting the pride and heritage of Puri and Odisha.

Adding to the festival's prominence, President Droupadi Murmu will be attending the celebrations, underscoring the event's national significance.

As per the schedule approved by Chhattisha Nijog and the temple managing committee, the Rath Yatra for the sibling deities will commence at 5 PM on July 7. The chariots are expected to arrive at the Gundicha temple the following day, and on July 9, the deities will be taken to the ‘Adapa Mandap’ inside the temple.

To ensure law and order during the festival, 90 officers have been designated as executive magistrates in Puri. The town is preparing to welcome between five to eight lakh devotees on Rath Yatra day, highlighting the massive scale and importance of the event.
