Odisha govt prepares plans to protect against natural calamities

The Water Resources (WR) Department of Odisha has chalked out a strategy to construct a 380 km long river embankment with an investment of Rs 1,944 crore. The embankment will be constructed to protect the coasts of Odisha which are vulnerable to tides. This was stated by Jyotirmay Rath, Principal Engineer, Department of Water Resources after a meeting chaired by Secretary, Department Anu Garg.

A Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared under the supervision of Department of Water Resources for construction of first phase of 380 km long embankment at an estimated cost of Rs 1,944 crore, Rath said. He said the embankment will be constructed by tying stones along the coast. These stones will be covered with iron nets to prevent them from dispersion due to tides. A large number of trees will be planted near the embankment to prevent strong winds on the coast.

Rath further said that the 52 km long embankment in Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Ganjam districts which was constructed in 2013 and 2016 at a cost of Rs. Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik said during a review meeting with PM Narendra Modi on Friday that the coastline of the state is 480 kilometres long, most of which is sensitive to high tides.
