As the nation mourned the death of Milkha Singh, one of our foremost sports stars, who died at 91 from Covid-related complications, several people paid tribute to the great athlete who represented India at the 1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics. VA Shrikumar too shared a lovely memory on social media.
The Odiyan director remembered making a promo video with Mohanlal and the Flying Sikh, who were the brand ambassadors for the first international half marathon organised by the Kochi Corporation in 2013. Speaking about the shoot, Shrikumar wrote, “Milkha Singh was very keen to be part of this for two reasons: for Lalettan and God’s Own Country. The shoot was in Fort Kochi and various parts of Kochi under the blazing sun, but he didn’t tire.”
Shrikumar spoke about how both Mohanlal and Milkha were inspirational for the crew and large number of spectators watching the shoot. “Milkha Singh ran more than was required for the shoot. We could not match up to his energy and agility. Lalettan and he engaged in a running competition.” Thanks to these two professionals, the shoot that was planned over two days, was completed in one, notes Shrikumar, and while Milkha was a big Mohanlal fan, the actor, in his typical way, easily won the athlete’s friendship. The latter even hoped to get Mohanlal’s help to achieve his aim of creating good sportspersons for the country.
“In any difficult situation, there are some things that give me comfort,” says Shrikumar. “That is that I have be able to share the company and friendship of some amazing people and be part of historic moments. Meeting beloved Milkha Singh was one of this.”
