Kherson: Eight civilians were killed by Russian forces in attacks on the Kherson region of southern Ukraine on Wednesday, according to officials. The attacks targeted nearby villages as well as a hypermarket and train station in the regional capital.

According to the Ukrainian prosecutor's office, three people were killed in what appeared to be an artillery strike as they were doing their morning shopping in the Kherson hypermarket.

Local authorities reported that three energy workers died while performing repairs in a nearby village, one person was killed in a residential building in another settlement, and one person was also killed when the city railway station was bombarded.

Reuters reporters on the scene described pools of blood and debris lying on the ground outside the hypermarket, whose entrance had suffered significant damage and been cordoned off.

According to the interior ministry, all of the victims were either customers or employees of the hypermarket.
According to Serhii Cherevatyi, a military spokesperson for Ukraine, "When the enemy can achieve nothing on the battlefield, its strikes at peaceful cities."

At the railway station, where there appeared to have been three explosions, windows were broken. On stretchers, two people could be seen being taken out alive. Three women at the station claimed to have eaten before hiding under a table.

We can't bargain with murderers in Russia. They need to be prosecuted. Ihor Klymenko, the interior minister, issued a statement.
Russia did not respond to the incident's immediate questions. As Ukraine gets ready for a counteroffensive that it hopes will alter the course of Russia's more than 14-month-old war in Ukraine, it has increased airstrikes in recent days.

Kherson was retaken by Ukrainian forces in November of last year after being under Russian occupation for almost a year. Currently, the area is almost constantly being bombarded by Russian forces stationed on the other side of the Dnipro River.

Although Russia has denied purposefully attacking civilians, attacks on residential areas across Ukraine have resulted in many fatalities since the invasion in February of last year.

Kherson city will be under a curfew from Friday evening until Monday morning for "law enforcement" purposes, the regional governor had previously declared. He offered no further justification.
