Two persons have been detained by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department for killing a wild elephant in the Anchetty forest region. V. Muthu (35) and C. Kaliyappan (28) of Ezhumanaidodi near Anchetty were arrested and held in judicial prison on Saturday night.

Villagers who had gone to the forest to pasture livestock on Wednesday discovered the elephant's death and contacted the local forest range office, according to Department authorities. According to forest officials, the carcass was that of an 18-year-old wild elephant with a bullet wound to the right side of the head.

Wildlife warden K. Karthikeyani of the Hosur forest division, which covers the Anchetty forest range, told media: "To apprehend the guilty, special forest teams led by Anchettty, Urigam, and Hosur ranges were created, as well as an elite force of forest squad and dog squad. Two of the defendants were apprehended, while the third remains at large."

He said that the two suspects went to the forest on Wednesday to hunt rabbits, but were suddenly attacked by a wild elephant. To get away, Kaliyappan shot it in the head, killing the wild tusker in the incident.
