To satisfy summer demand, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) would acquire a total of 1,000 megawatts of power, with tenders for 400 megawatts being offered.

TANGEDCO has been given permission by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) to acquire 1,000 MW of power, of which 400 MW would be purchased immediately. Officials from TANGEDCO stated the process has already begun and that the immediate power purchase is needed to meet summer demand.

From March onwards, when commercial facilities begin operations and schools and colleges schedule tests, the need for electricity will soar, owing to the warm summer that the state will have to endure. "Currently, there is a projected shortfall of 1,253 MW of electricity in March," a TANGEDCO official told IANS, "as the demand is expected to be 15,500 MW but the availability is just 14,247 MW."

TNERC has given TANGEDCO permission to purchase 1,000 MW of electricity, of which 400 MW would be supplied soon, he added, owing to the power crisis. The tender process will begin in the third week of February, according to instructions issued by India's Ministry of Power.
