OIC chief calls on ICCIA to aid SMEs

Riyadh: The Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture has been urged by Hissein Brahim Taha, secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, to concentrate on launching initiatives to support small, medium, and micro businesses as well as digitization, investment, and tourism.

His remarks were made during the 35th meeting of the ICCIA board of directors, which took place on July 17–18 in Baku, according to the Saudi Press Agency. 

Taha emphasized the ICCIA's role in fostering intertrade and investment, agriculture, rural development, food security, tourism, Islamic financial services, infrastructure development, and women's and youth employment as means of fostering economic growth in its member states.

In addition to the recommendations that will be made to the OIC's Ministerial Conference on Food Security and Agricultural Development, which will be held in Doha in October, the secretary-general urged the board of directors to review and approve various agricultural programs and projects.

The meeting's main objective was to discuss proposals and projects that will be submitted for approval to the ICCIA's General Assembly in the areas of investment, tourism, the halal industry, and capacity building.

A memorandum of intent to hold a halal forum in Baku was also signed as a result, along with four partner institutions from Azerbaijan.
