Recently, researchers have found pieces of plastic in human blood for the first time. These pieces are microplastic in human blood. For the research, scientists from the Netherlands took blood samples of 22 healthy people and found that 17 (77.2 per cent) of them had microplastics in their blood. Researchers have revealed that this is the first time this has happened and it is very dangerous.
Not only this, in the past, the remains of microplastics have also been found in the brain, intestine, placenta of unborn children and stools of adults and infants, but these have been found for the first time in blood samples. Professor Dick Wethak, a study author at the Vries University Amsterdam in the Netherlands, said, "We have to expand the research and increase the sample size, the number of polymers evaluated, etc.''
The study, published in the journal Environment International, also tested for 5 types of plastics - polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PI), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Researchers found that 50 per cent of blood samples contained polyethylene terephthalate (PET). This was the most prevalent plastic type in the samples. According to the information, PET is also being used in the bottles of drinks. Along with this, during the investigation, Polystyrene was found in one-third of the people which is being used in food packaging and other products. Polyethylene has been found in a quarter of blood samples from which plastic bags are made. Regarding this research, Professor Dick Wethak said, 'Our research is the first indication that there are polymeric particles inside our blood. This is an important discovery.
