The Fijian government has tightened measures to prevent the Omicron Covid-19 variant from spreading throughout the South Pacific island nation.

Faiyaz Koya, Minister of Commerce, Trade, Tourism, and Transport, told reporters here that with the Omicron variant's rapid spread confirmed in the country, key measures against the virus should be tightened to contain its transmission.

People who do not follow the health protocols, according to the Minister, will be fined starting Monday. Those who do not wear a mask in the required settings will be fined 250 Fijian dollars ($117), according to Koya. Individuals will be fined 250 Fijian dollars and businesses will be fined 1,000 Fijian dollars for failing to undertake temperature checks.

Businesses in high-risk areas that fail to check vaccination status may be fined $1,000 Fijian dollars. Among the steps to be enhanced are the following: Group meetings in homes, villages, and community centres will be limited to 20 people beginning Monday. If necessary, Koya added, the authorities will not hesitate to punish people or shut businesses, including hotels.

Fijians were also encouraged to get booster shots, according to the Minister. Meanwhile, James Fong, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Health, revealed five more Covid deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of Covid deaths to 709.  The island nation's infection tally now stands at 57,187, with 1,280 new confirmed cases.

In Fiji, 94.2 percent of the adult target population has been fully vaccinated, with 97.9% having received at least one dose. In March 2020, Fiji, which has a population of around 900,000 people, reported the first confirmed coronavirus infection. In April of last year, it was hit by the second wave.
