CHENNAI: According to a statement from the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Public Health, the Delta variant of Covid-19 has been completely replaced in the state by the Omicron variant.

According to the state public health department's findings, the BA.2 variant accounted for 68.4 percent of all whole-genome sequenced samples, while the BA.1.1 variant accounted for 15.2 percent.

BA.1 (10.3 percent), B.1.1.529 (6 percent), and BA.3 (7.3 percent) are the other variants (0.05 per cent). According to the statement, no Delta variants were found in the whole-genome analysed samples.

In January 2022, the Omicron variant accounted for 92 percent of the samples, while the Delta variant accounted for 4 percent and the balance was made up of different varieties.

The state public health department further stated that Tamil Nadu will continue to monitor the situation, noting that the BA.2 variation has been linked to an increase in Covid cases in Europe and the United States, and urging people not to relax their guard.

In Tamil Nadu, new Covid cases are on the decline, with the state reporting only 33 new cases. On Monday, 26 of the state's 38 districts reported no new Covid cases.
