Lucknow: The BJP, which returned to power after winning the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections for the second consecutive time with a thumping majority, is now aiming to get a majority in the Legislative Council as well. At the same time, the challenge before the SP is not only to retain its seats, but also to open the account, because if we look at the history of MLC elections, the ruling party has been winning. The BJP is sitting in power in the state and the SP is in the opposition. The MLC election is getting confined between BJP and SP.

BJP has already won unopposed in 9 out of 36 MLC seats of local body in UP, due to which the counting of votes is going on in the remaining 27 MLC seats. The BJP is hoping to win at least 25 out of these 27 seats. If this happens, BJP will create history by becoming the largest party in the Legislative Council. The BJP may have dominated the assembly since Yogi Adityanath became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2017, but the SP's position in the Legislative Council used to speak.

In the Legislative Council elections, SP had fielded its candidates on 34 out of 36 seats, while 2 seats were handed over to the ally Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD). Due to snatching of SP candidate's pamphlets at four places during the nomination, he could not enroll. Then due to the withdrawal of the name of the SP-RLD candidate, the BJP candidates were successful in registering an uncontested victory in 9 seats. Now the SP has to struggle even to save the bail, far from winning any of the 27 seats.
