Amritsar: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday announced major changes to strengthen the party. The party has decided to give more space to the youth, women as well as other sections of society. A central election body has been formed for organisational changes in the party.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Sukhbir Badal said the party would stick to its core principles, including the need for a federal structure, peace and communal harmony among all sections of society and all religious people. He said the Akali Dal was a nearly 102-year-old regional party, which was continuously serving the poor, farmers and labourers. Sukhbir Singh Badal appealed to Punjabis to understand which parties wanted to divide them for petty politics. Explaining the changes being made by the party, he said that SAD will focus on developing the next generation of leaders, for this 50 per cent of the seats in the upcoming assembly will be reserved for workers below 50 years of age.

The SAD chief further said that changes would also be made in the decision-making core committee of the party. He said the core committee will be reconstituted to include a new generation of workers, including youth, women and representatives from all sections of the society. The Akali Dal leader announced that the party would now follow the principle of one family one ticket. He said that, if the government is formed, party workers at both district and state levels will be provided chairmanship and family members of MPs and MLAs will not be considered for these posts. He also announced that the district president will not contest from now on.
