New Delhi: The High-Level Committee overseeing the possibility of holding simultaneous elections in India has issued a public notice, inviting members of the general public to provide suggestions for making appropriate changes in the existing legal administrative framework to enable simultaneous elections in the country. The notice encourages individuals to share their insights and recommendations on this crucial matter.

Suggestions can be submitted through the committee's website, oneo.gov.in, or sent via email to sc-hlc@gov.in. This move is part of the committee's initiative to engage with the public and gather diverse perspectives to inform the creation of a comprehensive legal and administrative framework for permanent simultaneous elections.

The committee, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, had its preliminary meeting, which included key figures such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ministry of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal, and others. The objective is to explore the feasibility and implications of holding simultaneous elections on a permanent basis, necessitating potential amendments to the Constitution and related election laws.

Specific areas of consideration include the preparation of common electoral rolls, addressing logistics related to electronic voting machines (EVMs) and Voter Verified Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs), among other aspects. Harish Salve, Senior Advocate, also contributed virtually to the committee's discussions.

The "One Nation, One Election" initiative was established through a notification on September 20, 2023. The Committee's Terms of Reference emphasize the need for recommendations that will shape the legal and administrative foundation for simultaneous elections, taking into account various complexities and challenges. All suggestions received by January 15, 2024, will be thoroughly considered by the Committee in its efforts to streamline the electoral process in India.
