Newq Delhi: Minister of Union Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal said, as many as 77 crore people in the country have been covered under the 'One Nation One Ration Card' system, which allows recipients to get their portion of food grains from anywhere in the country.
Goyal stated in the Lok Sabha that Prime Minister Narendra Modi conceptualised the technology-driven programme while considering the difficulties migrant workers encounter in obtaining government benefits. He stated that the scheme is now available in 35 states and union territories, with 77 million beneficiaries.
"Through this facility, while a migrant beneficiary is able to obtain ration at the location where he or she is working, his or her family back home is also allowed to get their share of the entitled ration to feed itself," he explained during Question Hour.
The minister said, the challenges of obtaining a new ration card and beneficiary duplication have been resolved, and beneficiaries can now obtain food grains by simply providing their Aadhaar number. He stated that the plan allows migrant recipients to obtain food grains from a fair-priced business of their choosing by utilising their same or current ration card with biometric identification of identity.
