New Delhi: The price of the necessary commodity has been soaring in metros across the country After soaring petrol prices, people especially in Mumbai and Pune are facing the brunt of high food commodity prices. Onion prices reached Rs 100 per Kg in Mumbai and Pune owing to rising rates at Lasalgaon wholesale market in Nashik. The supply shortage is the key reason for the hike in prices of onion.

According to the report, The retail price of the onion on October 21 was reported at Rs 80-100 per kg in Mumbai and Rs 100-120 per kg in Pune. The average wholesale price of onion at Lasalgaon reached highest since January at Rs 1900-6200 per quintal.  Talking about the reasons for  rise in the price of the commodity, Supply shortage is the key reason for hike in prices of onion. Heavy rainfall in the region was another factor which is responsible behind the surge in price.

According to the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, onion prices steadily moved upwards since August 2020. A trader told ANI, "Price has increased as supply from farms is affected due to rain. The price of onion that was around Rs 70/kg last week increased to Rs 120/kg today.
