Ontario, Canada's most populated province, has recorded 5,790 new Covid-19 cases, breaking the previous record for the most single-day infections.

According to the media reports, the total number of Covid-19 cases in Ontario has now surpassed 667,353, with 10,140 deaths. It follows the confirmation of 3,453 new cases on Tuesday and 4,383 new cases on Wednesday by the province.

The rolling seven-day average in Ontario has risen to 4,001, up from 1,674 this time last week. According to the Ontario government, the province's positive rate jumped to 16 percent on Thursday, the highest percentage ever, with 68,191 tests completed in the last 24 hours. In terms of new cases, People who are unvaccinated, partially vaccinated, or whose vaccination status is uncertain were involved in 1,398 cases on Thursday.

The remaining 4,392 infections occurred in persons who had received all of their vaccines. Of the 5,790 new cases recorded, 637 were in children under the age of 12, 560 in youth ages 12 to 19, and 2,662 in adults aged 20 to 39. A total of 90 cases were reported in schools across the province, affecting 71 students and 20 teachers.

Covid-19 has been confirmed in 1,151 of the province's 4,844 schools, resulting in the closure of 21 institutions. On December 26, Ontario will enter a stringent province-wide lockdown, requiring almost all non-essential businesses to close. According to the Ontario government, the lockdown will begin at 12:01 a.m. and will remain until January 23, 2022. Due to the rapid spread of the novel Omicron variety, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, Theresa Tam, has stated that case numbers might be "extremely high" by early January. Canada's entire Covid caseload has climbed to 1,945,754, with 30,131 cases as of Friday morning.
