"Half a billion population will be drowned in poverty"- Oxfam report

New Delhi: Coronavirus spread from Wuhan city of China has stopped the economic activity around the world, after which it is said that the whole world is facing the threat of an economic slowdown. Oxfam, an organization working towards poverty alleviation, said in its report released on Thursday that about half of the world's Arab population could fall into poverty.

Oxfam said on Thursday that more than 83,000 people have died due to the outbreak of the corono virus and that there has been a severe blow to economies around the world. Due to which about half of the Arab population can drown in poverty. A report released ahead of next week's International Monetary Fund (IMF) / World Bank annual meeting by a Nairobi-based charity calculates the impact of the crisis on global poverty due to household income or consumption. The report said that 'this fast-growing economic crisis is deeper than the global economic crisis of 2008'.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has already expressed the apprehension that the world's economy may be the victim of the biggest economic downturn after 1930. The world's GDP had fallen by 15 percent due to the Great Depression in the economy in 1930. Whereas the economic recession of 2008 caused a loss of only 1 percent of the world's GDP. But in 2020 these losses can be 15 to 20 times larger.
