New Delhi: A court in the national capital Delhi exempted former Union minister and veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram and his son Karti from appearing privately in court on Wednesday in the INX Media money laundering case. Special Judge MK Nagpal granted this relief to Chidambaram. Chidambaram's lawyer had said in the petition filed on his behalf that he is currently busy campaigning for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
A Delhi court had on March 24 issued summons to P Chidambaram and Karti Chidambaram taking cognizance of the supplementary charge sheet filed against them by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The court will further hear the matter on 16 April. Chidambaram's lawyer Arshadip Singh said that both father and son are Congress's star campaigners in the Tamil Nadu election campaign. The court also issued a notice to the ED on the bail petition filed on behalf of co-accused Peter Mukherjee in the case.
Chidambaram was arrested on 21 August 2019 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the INX Media corruption case. He was arrested by the ED in a related money laundering case on October 16, 2019. Six days later, on October 22, the Supreme Court granted bail to Chidambaram in the case registered by the CBI. He was granted bail on December 4, 2019, in the ED case. The case was registered by the CBI on 15 May 2017.
