NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has extended the stay on the arrest of senior Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram for a day. In a hearing held on Tuesday, Chidambaram's lawyer has appealed to the Enforcement Directorate to provide written details of the interrogation of his lawyer in the case so far. Justice R. The bench of Pandora and Ramjustice AS Bopanna is hearing an appeal filed against the Delhi High Court's decision to revoke Chidambaram's anticipatory bail.

The hearing will also be held on Wednesday in which Solicitor General Tushar Mehta will defend ED. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who is defending Chidambaram, said, "The right to citizens under Articles 20 and 21 cannot be suspended even during war and emergency. The money laundering law against Chidambaram, which is being alleged to be violated, was enacted in 2009, while the charges were from 2007-2008. Singhvi said that not responding to the desired response by the agency does not mean that Chidambaram is running away from ED's questions.

Another senior advocate and Congress leader Kapil Sibal, who is defending the former Finance Minister, requested the court to direct the ED to furnish the written details of the interrogation conducted on December 19, January 1 and January 21, 2019. It will reveal whether Chidambaram is avoiding answering during interrogation, as ED is alleging. Sibal said that ED cannot suddenly seek custody of Chidambaram by holding documents from behind to the court. On the other hand, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram termed the entire action as politically motivated.
