Ahmedabad: Congress veteran and former Home Minister P Chidambaram on Tuesday (November 8) said in a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections that no one has apologized for the Morbi bridge accident so far. Nor did he resign, in which 135 people died. Home Minister P Chidambaram, who came to campaign for the Congress in the state, has alleged that the government of Gujarat is run from Delhi and not from its CM. Let us tell you that the voting for the assembly elections in Gujarat is going to be held in two phases on December 1 and 5 and the counting of votes will be done on December 8.

Earlier, the British-era cable bridge built on the Machu river in Morbi collapsed on 30 October. 141 people lost their lives in this accident. The bridge was reopened to the public on 26 October after being repaired by a private company. Chidambaram said that, as far as I know, no one has apologized for such a big accident and no one has resigned from their post. Had this happened somewhere abroad, the resignations would have been taken immediately. Chidambaram further said that the apology was not made because the government feels that it can easily win the upcoming elections and they do not need to be held accountable for the mishap. On the question of the BJP-ruled states announcing the formation of a committee to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Chidambaram said that even a child knows that UCC can be implemented not by the states, but by a law passed in the Parliament.

Chidambaram further said that in those states where people defeat the government, they feel accountable. I appeal to the people of Gujarat to change this government and give an opportunity to Congress. Chidambaram alleged that central investigating agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) were misused, saying they were servants of the BJP. Of those arrested by such agencies, 95 per cent are politicians from opposition parties.
