Former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader, Imran Khan, has been granted bail by a Pakistan court in the Toshakhana case, as reported by the Pakistani media. This development comes just ahead of the scheduled parliamentary elections on February 8, 2024.

The court's decision arrived after Imran Khan was sentenced to three years in prison and fined Rs.100,000 by Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Humayun Dilawar for his involvement in corruption related to the Toshakhana case. The charges against Khan implicated him in the improper sale of state gifts valued over Rs.140 million (USD 490,000) that he had received from foreign dignitaries during his trips abroad, the report read.

Imran Khan, a former cricket star, faced removal as Prime Minister in April 2022 through a no-confidence motion. Subsequently, on May 9, 2023, he was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on corruption charges. The political landscape shifted further when 127 members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) resigned from the National Assembly after Khan's ousting through the no-confidence vote in 2022, plunging Pakistan into a political crisis.

In August 2023, Anwaar ul Haq Kakar was sworn in as the eighth Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan amidst the political turmoil.

However, regarding the upcoming 2024 Pakistan Elections, Imran Khan faces disqualification by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) due to his conviction in the Toshakhana case. The ECP's ruling bars PTI founder Imran Khan from contesting elections for a span of five years. Imran Khan was deemed ineligible for corrupt practices under Section 167 of the Elections Act, 2017, further solidifying his disqualification after the three-year sentence handed down to him.
