Pakistan reportedly imposed a ban on JeM chief Masood Azhar, a day after UNSC listed him as a global terrorist

Islamabad: On Thursday, a day after the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) listed Masood Azhar as a global terrorist, Pakistan also imposed a ban on Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief. Meanwhile, earlier in the day, the Ministry of External Affairs said that the Pulwama terror attack played a role in Azhar’s designation. MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar asserted that Pakistan was making claims over the listing to divert attention from the “huge diplomatic” setback it has suffered.

Here it is to be noted that the MEA’s statement came after Pakistan claimed that it agreed to Azhar’s listing after all “political references”, including attempts to link him to the Pulwama attack, were removed from the proposal to designate him a global terrorist. However, earlier Masood Azhar Designated Global Terrorist by UN and Syed Akbaruddin Thanks Countries For Support, Former PM Manmohan Singh Expresses Happiness. The MEA spokesperson added, “The designation is not based on the basis of a specific incident, but on the basis of evidence which we have shared with members of the UN’s 1267 Sanctions Committee, linking Azhar to several acts of terrorism.”

However, it is worth mention here that Masood Azhar Designated Terrorist: France Welcomes UN Move, Credits 'Relentless French Diplomacy' For Sanctioning of JeM Chief. Yesterday, Azhar was listed as a global terrorist by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). It is considered as a huge diplomatic win for India as China, which had blocked Masood Azhar's listing as global terrorist four times, finally dropped its objections.
